“I live in gym clothes,” said Alexander Wang. “When you go out on the street, it’s the uniform now.”
My picks from the collection:
I have always wanted to find a perfume I could call my signature scent, and I think after years and years of searching, I have decided that it just might be “Flower Market” by Maison Martin Margiela. It is has a Grasse rose petal base, with Sambac jasmine and tuberose with cedar and moss. Seriously, this fragrance will teleport you to the floating flower market by The Singel canal in Amsterdam.
What do you think of Isabel Marant’s new spin on the retro Bart sneakers? Like the Bekett and the Willow Sneakers, the Bart also has a concealed heel, slightly shorter- at around an inch. I really like the black ones!
Styling tip:Wear yours with boyfriend jeans and a leather jacket for a cool city girl look.
These Givenchy “Matilda” sandals are absolutely killer! They’re not your typical strappy heels, what with the textured leather and the gold metal heel. They come in black or white. Wear these babies with a pencil skirt and blouse for uber chicness. Amanda Seyfried, who is now the face of Givenchy’s Very Irrésistible fragrance , was spotted wearing them at the premiere of ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’
On the Lust List: Givenchy Matilda Sandals: £1,118
The other day I came across an interview with Natalie Kingham, the buying director at matchesfashion.com. Natalie, 40, was the one who picked up Alexander McQueen’s 3rd collection for Joseph. She buys for 14 boutiques and the Matches online store too. The woman can apparently look at a bag and know that if it fastens in a certain way it will sell. In other words; a buying prodigy.
Anyway, in this interview they ask her about what she thinks will be a key trend this fall. Her answer?
Excuse my ignorance if you’re familiar with the term ‘normcore,’ I applaud your fashion savviness. But I came home and did a little bit of research. Turns out, normcore is a unisex trend, characterized by unpretentious, average-looking clothing. The term combines the words “normal” and “hardcore”, and was coined by K-Hole, a trend forecasting group. Source? Wikipedia. Seriously.
It goes on to say that “normcore wearers are people who do not wish to distinguish themselves from others by their clothing. This is not to mean that they are unfashionable people who wear whatever comes to hand, but that they consciously choose clothes that are undistinguished – except, frequently, for a highly visible label to impart prestige. The “normcore” trend has been interpreted as a reaction to a fashion oversaturation resulting from ever faster-changing fashion trends.”
It occured to me quite suddenly, that I actually have witnessed this trend, and have been witnessing it over the past few years. I just didn’t know what it was coined. With birkenstocks coming back into fashion, Adidas slippers, knits, knits, knits, and rucksacks by every single living designer in the world. Basically a return to normality. Casualness. I think it’s more of an attitude than a look really. A plain attitude. Jeremy Lewis, the founder of Garmento, calls normcore “one facet of a growing anti-fashion sentiment.”
It’s clear as day now when I scroll through my Instagram and tumblr and find bloggers and fashion it girls following this trend. Throwing on a nike snapback with some anonymous denim and disappearing into the crowd headphones in ear listening to their Alt-J playlist. Personally, I do think everyone in this world has a particular sense of style and an interpretation of how they perceive it too. I have never worn Birkenstocks, or the Celine version there of for that matter. So why would I go out and buy a pair now?
I think my style has been pretty consistent over the years. I do like to try new things, but I’m not comfortable changing the way I dress to to follow a certain trend. However, the anonymity of the normcore trend is what appeals to me. “I wonder who that blazer is by?” and “that leather skirt is divine”. I’m attracted to hardware, which is why you can always tell what bag I’m carrying. The Vivienne bag by Louis Vuitton, the Cassandre by Saint Laurent, and even the Natalia bag by Tomford, all have massive statement hardware. It’s chunky. It’s hardcore. I like buckles, chains, and statement hardware. With clothing, the more understated the better. I’m very monochrome, and quite plain. So I’m a little norm with a little core myself, but you won’t find me in birks and sweatpants, ever. It’s quite ironic that this trend is meant to be quite effortless, but it’s actually far from. People are consciously going out of there way to be anti-fashion. Oh well, there it is. Normcore everybody!
Fashion IT girl Cara Delevigne, has just landed her first first ever solo campaign for Topshop! This isn’t the first time the quirky supermodel has been involved with the highstreel giants. She’s walked in their Unique shows and she also appeared in the Kate Moss campaign back in 2010. I’m super excited about this collection because she’s definitely my favourite model. She’s juggled a gazillion things this year and still manages to keep things fun and bizarre. She’s just a ball of positive energy! Other than the fact that she has the most perfect eyebrows, she’s also got the voice of angel. Do you remember her duet with Will Heard? It was on repeat on my iPod for ages. (Listen to it here)
Sir Philip Green commented on the campaign saying “It (was) fitting to have a fabulous, young British star such as Cara at the epicentre of our campaign. I am hopeful and confident that this will be the beginning of another strong relationship for TOPSHOP.”
The collection is in Topshop stores now.
Every time I travel, I make it a point to buy two things ‘duty free’. 1. A lipstick and 2. A skin product. The reason why I do this is because for years, I have tried to maintain my skin so as just to wear lipstick and a little mascara. It’s been quite a journey considering I have extremely sensitive skin. I like to try new products but still continue to purchase the ones I think do the best job for my skin depending on the season and weather.
While in Barcelona last month, I picked up this AMAZING toner by Clarins. I never gave much thought to toners before, but this is definitely one for the books. It removes the impurities that your cleanser can’t get rid of. It leaves your skin feeling smooth and smelling great! And because it’s alcohol-free, it doesn’t make your skin dry. I’m really happy about finding this toner! (See smile below)
Try it and tell me what you think!
Here are my favourite looks from the Chanel Haute couture Fall show. Karl Lagerfeld never fails to impress me with how clear-cut his visions are. I say this with a lot of hesitation, but there was a beautiful kitschy aspect to this collection. The models strutted down the runways in beautifully tailored overcoats that were thrown over shorts and paired with flipflops. “The models can walk in those dresses like they’re nothing,” he said.
There was mindblowing contrast between the exquisite embroidery and the punk hair, Between the elegance and the vulgarity, between the young and the old. I really feel Chanel is being reborn again. No wonder Karl chose the 7-month pregnant Ashleigh Good to close the show. Fresh new beginnings!
The holy month of Ramadan is time of self-reflection for many of us. Muslims all around the world fast from sunrise to sunset to help us train our self-restraint and feel with the needy. It is a month dedicated to charity and kindness unto others. I feel that although for most of the year I don’t think about it twice, Ramadan is a month in which I dress a little conservatively- out of respect to others. Most of the Middle East has dealt with quite an early summer, with heat waves reaching as high as 39 degrees in Amman. To those of you living in the Gulf, this might seem normal. However for us living in Jordan, it’s sometimes intolerable. We’re not used to weather like this you see, our bodies do not adapt well to this type of heat. But nonetheless, we’re grateful for the sunny weather because our winters have been blistering cold and icy over the past couple of years.
So in this scorching heat, what do you wear? I’ve opted for blouses over lightweight jeans. Today I wore a maxi dress under a little denim jacket with cropped sleeves. I feel that a white blazer is a Ramadan essential in this heat because it’s casual and it’ll keep you cool enough at the office, and you can also dress it up with heels for a chic iftar outfit. I especially like this Zara one below.
Kaftans and abayas are also an option, especially if they’re made out of lightweight silk. They’ll keep you cool and you’ll look like you’re dressing for the occasion, which is always a good thing. Invest in a good quality Kaftan because it will come in handy for a friend’s henna night or Katb Ktab celebration.
Spanx announced last Thursday that its latest addition to the brand is a line of denim beginning with two styles, “The Signature” and the “Slim-X”, and will be available in different cuts including straight and bootleg.
“I see Spanx as a lifestyle brand that is delighting women in making things fit better and feel better on the body, and not just through compression,” Creator of Spanx Sarah Blakely told WWD. “We’re known for making you look thinner and more toned, but it can just be about a better cut and fit.”
Say goodbye to muffin tops and hello to your inner J.Lo.
If you know me at all, you know I can’t handle a mess. I’ll admit to getting flustered and untidy sometimes, but its organized chaos and tends not too last more than a few hours. I’m the type of person who can’t go to sleep if my suitcase is unpacked or a drawer in the dresser is left open. So you can imagine the little piece of heaven this Marni oxblood leather bag is to me. It has 5 internal compartments AND an front pocket too!
I’ve already begun compartmentalizing:
1st compartment: Cash, credit cards, and coin pouch.
2nd Compartment: Lipstick, hand cream and comb.
3rd Compartment: Panadol, chewing gum, and the occasional Mentos.
4th Compartment: Sunglasses.
5th Compartment: iPhone, earphones, and Samsung Galaxy Camera.
Front pocket: Pen. (A pen always comes in handy)
The bag also comes with a detachable strap so you can change up your carrying style.
Heaven? I think so.
